Term 3 – Mighty Metals

 

Welcome back from the holidays. We hope that you had a fantastic Christmas and New Year. We have a busy term ahead (when don’t we?) and this term’s newsletter is attached.

Trip to Wilmot Park – please enjoy the photos from our trip on 3rd January 2017 where we did some research into playground equipment and a science experiment about friction.

Term 2 – Gods and Mortals

 

Exhibition of work – Thank you so much to all of you who attended our exhibition of work in the classroom. We expanded the work shown and included some interactive activities but would like to develop these events further, so any suggestions you have on how we could improve them will be greatly welcomed.

 

Christmas Nativity Concert – The children brought letters home on Friday 25th November 2016 detailing their part in the concert. If you need any help with costumes, please let Mrs Roach know as there are some costumes in school which we can use if you would prefer.

Date: Tuesday 6th December 2016. Please arrive at 5.45pm for a 6pm start.

Week beginning 21st November 2016 – This week the children have been analysing instruction texts, looking for the important features and then writing their own.

Here are some examples of their fabulous writing:

Topic homework – For those children who have misplaced this term’s homework sheet, please this term’s newsletter below. The suggested homework is the third page. Thank you.

MyMaths Homework – Apologies! In an attempt to be efficient I set the MyMaths homework for the next couple of weeks but forgot to set the date for next week’s homework so it automatically released it this week. If your child cannot do the homework yet, please don’t worry as I have extended the deadline to next Friday. Sorry again!

 

Times tables – Edison class have been amazing in learning their 4 and 9 times tables. 19 children earned their bronze certificates this week. We are now moving on to mastering the related division facts.

 

Diary writing – Over the last couple of weeks, the children have been learning about diary writing. They concentrated on a different feature each day and then brought their learning together to write diary entries about their Friendship Day or their trip to the cinema.

 

Here is some of their writing.

Cinema Trip – On Thursday 17th November 2016 several classes were invited to the cinema at Bluewater to watch Alice Through the Looking Glass. The children thoroughly enjoyed the trip and gained lots from the experience. The cinema staff commented on West Hill being the best behaved children they had seen so far!

 

Friendship Day – On Wednesday 16th November 2016 the entire school took part in Friendship Day. Edison class started off making a friendship banner before visiting other classes. In Hawking class they learnt about iguanas and then acted out a poem about them. In Williams class they worked in groups to make structures out of paper that would support a pile of dictionaries. Finally, in Beckham class they made a giant jigsaw with each piece representing them and the special things about them that make them unique. The children were very excited when they returned to class and were eager to share their experiences. When available and checked for permissions, photographs will be uploaded.

 

Engage Week – The children completely immersed themselves in ancient Greece – the geography, timeline gods, myths, arts and more. Thank you to Mrs Mabb for the amazing drama workshop that she ran with the children – the video of which the children still enjoy watching. Unfortunately we cannot attach the video to this web page as we do not have permission for all the children to be shown.

 

Innovate Project – Arthur’s Seat

 

The Innovate phase of our Tremors topic involved the children working in groups to undertake a range of activities covering all areas of the curriculum, including identifying the risks involved if a volcano erupted in Edinburgh, creating a timeline of possible events, writing information and advice notices, designing shelters and presenting their work. Please look at their wonderful work in the attached document.

Performance Poetry

 

The children worked in groups to learn a poem about a volcano and recite it with expression and actions. They were amazing as the following video clip shows!

Times Tables Learning

 

The children have been working hard to learn their times tables – Year 3 on the 3 times table and Year 4 on the 7 times table. We have been singing songs in class and playing times table games and this, as well as the practise they have done at home, has reaped rewards. BRONZE certificates have been given to 23 pupils, SILVER certificates have been given to 22 and 14 will soon be receiving GOLD certificates -an amazing achievement in their first term!

 

Class Assembly 13th October 2016

 

Thank you to all the parents and family members who attended today’s class assembly. The children really did themselves proud. They planned, wrote and delivered the assembly themselves and really demonstrated how much they have learnt about the scientist our class is named after. Without your support, though, in helping them to learn their lines the assembly would not have been such a great success, so thank you again.
